Uncle Scotchy & The Time Thief is a darkly funny, deeply personal memoir about family, Alzheimer's, caregiving, music, grief - and the one thing none of us can outrun: time.
After his mother developed early-onset Alzheimer's, Miami musician and storyteller Eric Garcia - aka Uncle Scotchy - spent years navigating the strange, heartbreaking and often absurd world of family caregiving. Later, he also helped care for his father through his own decline.
During the pandemic, Garcia assembled those experiences into stories that became The Blues Opera, an immersive one-man production combining storytelling, original music and blues mythology. He performed the show 71 times in Miami. Now that story has become a book.
Structured as twelve boxing "Rounds," the memoir introduces an unseen adversary Garcia calls The Time Thief - a demon stealing memory, family and the one commodity nobody can replace.
But this isn't simply a memoir about Alzheimer's.
It's about becoming a parent to your parents, grieving someone who's still beside you, finding humor where humor shouldn't exist, and discovering that sometimes music, storytelling and love are the only weapons you've got.

Eric Garcia (Uncle Scotchy) is a Miami-based writer, musician, storyteller and longtime figure in South Florida's live-music community. Miami New Times named him Best Songwriter 2023. He created and performed the immersive one-man production The Blues Opera for a 71-show Miami run. Uncle Scotchy & The Time Thief is his memoir.
